Lionel Messi scored a stunning free kick for Inter Miami in a 2-2 draw with San Diego FC on Sunday, September 20, 2026, curling the ball through a crowded penalty area and into the far corner in the 24th minute, leaving goalkeeper CJ dos Santos with no chance, after Miami won the free kick just outside the box.
What The Free Kick Means The goal was Messi's 75th career free kick, moving him into outright second place on the all time free kick scoring list. He now sits just four goals behind the record of 78, held by retired Brazilian midfielder Marcelinho Carioca.
A Round Number And A Season Milestone The strike also took Messi's career goal tally to 930 and his Inter Miami total to 101. It was his 20th goal of the 2026 MLS season, making him only the second player in MLS history to reach 20 goals in three consecutive seasons.
