Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal's training camp amid a reported rift with head coach Jorge Jesus, days after being an unused substitute in a Nations League win over Norway. Portugal had already secured their place at the 2026 World Cup as Group F winners back in November 2025, so Sunday's match carried no qualification stakes, but the fallout from it has thrown the 41-year-old captain's international future into doubt. Ronaldo has not confirmed whether he has played his last match for Portugal, saying only that he will explain his reasons "in due course."
What Happened In Norway Ronaldo had reportedly been told by Jesus that he would feature only in the first and fourth fixtures of this international window. During Sunday's match against Norway, with the score tied 1-1, Jesus had Ronaldo warm up as though preparing to bring him on. When Portugal retook the lead, Jesus opted not to introduce him, and Ronaldo finished the 2-1 win as an unused substitute. He is reported to have left the stadium visibly angered by what he saw as disrespectful treatment. It followed a difficult outing against Wales days earlier, in which he missed several chances before being substituted in the 67th minute, a performance that had already drawn some criticism from Portuguese fans.
The Press Conference That Broke It Ronaldo trained away from the rest of the squad in the days that followed rather than joining full sessions. Ahead of Portugal's next fixture against Denmark, Jesus addressed the Norway substitution directly at a press conference, saying, "There was no incident whatsoever: as coach, I decided not to bring him on. It's nothing to make a fuss about," and adding, "I'm the one who makes the decisions and everybody knows that." According to reports, Ronaldo held a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença afterward before leaving for a private jet to Madrid. Jesus and Proença are reported to have attempted to intercept him at the airport to persuade him to stay, without success.
Ronaldo's Statement Ronaldo addressed his departure on Instagram: "Following the national team manager's press conference... I decided to leave the national team's training camp. In due course, I will tell the Portuguese people the truth about the reasons behind my departure." He added that he had "always dedicated" himself to the national team.
Portugal Moves On Without Him Portugal faced Denmark without Ronaldo, who did not travel with the squad. Competition rules require squads to fill shirt numbers 1 to 23 with no gaps, so with Ronaldo out of the squad entirely, his number 7 had to be reassigned rather than left vacant; it went to Rafael Leao, who normally wears number 17 for Portugal, which in turn passed to Fabio Silva. The captain's armband passed to Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese Football Federation's official Instagram account reportedly lost more than 500,000 followers within 24 hours of news of the departure breaking. The federation is said to believe Ronaldo may have effectively ended his international career, though he has not confirmed this himself, and the situation remains unresolved.
The Numbers Behind The Story Ronaldo holds Portugal's all-time records for both caps and goals, with 234 appearances and 146 international goals, the most scored by any men's player in international football history. He had previously said he was considering retiring from international duty after the 2026 World Cup, while also stating he wanted to continue chasing 1,000 career goals for club and country combined; he currently stands at 979, 21 short of that mark. He turns 42 in February.
